Kota Tua Creative Festival:
Ideas for the Future of Our Past
In the past 20 years, many attempts to revitalize Kota Tua (Old Town) Jakarta, the former Dutch center of trade in Southeast Asia, have failed to materialize due to the complexity and scale of the environmental, political, and social issues. As a result, though having a great touristic potential, this area is currently in a serious degradation state. Taking the approach of “Urban Archipuncture” in response to the formerly top-down masterplans, Kota Tua Creative Festival proposed a series of arts and cultural events, engaging public & private stakeholders with creative communities to create temporary interventions, with the vision that these exposures can lead to permanent changes. All drawings and illustrations are by author unless otherwise noted.

Branding & Identity

I designed the concept identity of the festival: primary colors and flying kites that symbolize young creative energy reviving the soul of an old town. Our curatorial team then worked with graphic designer in Thailand, web designer and developer in Hong Kong and India, and our internal graphic design team in Indonesia, to create consistent identity using the same elements.

Clouds of Thoughts Installation

The installation provided seats and canopy, the primary colored corridors made of kitelike elements converging at the plaza, spatially organizing the activities at the courtyard. The design expresses richness that can only be found in public spaces: freedom of expression and unscripted interaction of people of all backgrounds, rarely found in segregated spaces in Jakarta. Through means of social media campaign and direct interviews with a cross section of Jakarta residents - street vendors, children, professionals, and politicans - these collective voices expressing hopes for a better Jakarta are materialized in the form of over 10,000 silk-screened translucent colorful kites, forming a canopy, “Clouds of Thoughts.”
